Local Kilcoole boy Gavin Glynn received his honorary membership of
Blood Bikes Leinster on Wednesday at the St. Patricks Centre,
Greystones. The presentation was organised by Team Gavin Glynn and local
election candidate Jennifer Whitmore and coincided with the Blood
Transfusion Service’s Blood Donation Clinic.
Blood Bikes Leinster are a voluntary group of motorcyclists that
transport urgent supplies of blood and medical products between
hospitals . They work closely with Crumlin Hospital, Barretstown and
Aoibheanns Pink Tie.John Glynn said "We wanted to try to promote awareness of how important it is to donate blood as some people are unaware that Children with Cancer rely on blood donations every day of the week. Gavin has needed many blood transfusions over the last few years". Children and adults with cancer need blood transfusions as some chemotherapy drugs lower the number of red blood cells and surgery to treat cancer may lead to blood loss and a need for red blood cell or platelet transfusions.
Whitmore said ‘This presentation was held at the same time as the
Blood Donation Clinic to encourage as many as possible to donate. The
support given by the community to this event was fantastic. Attendance
at this year’s clinic was up 20 per cent on last year. Over 3000 blood
donations are needed in Ireland every week so it’s great to see the
local community making such a fantastic contribution to helping the
blood transfusion service.
